In physics, volume expansion, as contrasted with volume contraction, is the process in which a body is made to increase in size, generally though the action of the addition of heat or through chemical reaction.
History
Dutch physicist Willem Gravesande’s circa 1730 ball and ring experiment was one of the first measured experimental demonstrations of the phenomenon of expansion of a metal by heat. [1]
